There’s little doubt that we live in busy times. Visit any agency in the American Income Life family and it’s usually a busy place with all sorts of activities. Energy and excitement is the normal mood for most agencies. On a normal day, the locks are turned, the lights come on and the coffee is made…and then it’s full speed ahead until the lights go off at night. That’s how it works.

During a normal day, as an SGA, there are many demands for your time. Most of you are fully engaged in the operation of your business from early in the morning until it’s done each day. As an SGA, you are involved with recruiting, training and developing leaders every day. As a business owner, you have the day to day operation of your business to concern yourself with. Agents, managers, employees, administrative issues and much more pull you in a hundred different directions. It’s easy to get so caught up in the day to day operations of your business and simply forget the small things that make a big difference.

One thing that will make a big difference is an important investment; no, not an investment of money, but an investment of time. Critical time. Quiet time. Important time.  One of the most valuable things you can do is to invest time in your business and future. Here are a few suggested areas to invest in:

Take the time to plan. Plan today, plan tomorrow, plan next week, next month, next quarter and next year. You know where you are. You know where you want to be. How will you get there? Formulate a plan of attack. Write it down. Break it apart. Look at it frontwards and backwards. Remember, monumental accomplishments rarely happen without a plan. What’s your plan?

Take the time to think. Think…get creative…get outside of the box. Think about your American Income Life business from many different perspectives. Think differently. Think big. Think huge. Look at things from the outside and look at things from the inside. Look at things from 50,000 feet and then from the tree tops. What’s going to be better? What’s going to be different?

Take the time to study. Study your business. Study your history. Study your trends. Study your recruiting numbers. Dig in. There’s no telling what you’ll learn. There is so much to learn from what we have done and where we have been. The more time we invest in our business, the less likely we are to make the same mistake repeatedly. It’s also important to study others; those that are successful and getting it right. What subject will you study first?

So here’s the challenge: Invest one hour each day in yourself and your future. Make the investment and see where it takes you. Leave your office. Go alone. No cell phone. No laptop. No I-Pad. Try it the old fashion way with a pad and a pen. Look at where you are and where you want to be. The most important thing is to just do it. Make it a habit…
