How do we measure success at American Income Life?

- Financial security?
- Career growth?
- Community involvement?
- Quality relationships?
- Material possessions?
- The legacy you leave?

Whatever measure we choose, our ATTITUDE is the single most important fact in achieving success.

“Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances; to choose one’s own way.”

Victor E. Frankl
Psychologist and Holocaust Survivor

The First Key to Understanding Attitude

Our attitude at American Income Life is something we can ALWAYS control.

Given the worst set of circumstances or situations, we ultimately CHOOSE how we are going to RESPOND and, our RESPONSE is determined by our ATTITUDE.  Leaders understand that our POWER OF CHOICE is one of the greatest gifts we are given.  Each CHOICE we make ultimately translates into a positive or negative consequence for us, as well as those we are leading.

We must constantly remind ourselves that such a simple choice — embracing a positive or negative attitude—IS within our control. We too often forget that we have the power to choose.  Therefore, our ability to choose is a HUGE responsibility.

Leaders Don’t React, We Respond!

What is the difference? Simply put, the difference between reacting and responding is time and thought.  When was the last time you found yourself regretting how you reacted to a situation or a person?  For most of us it may have been 5 minutes ago or perhaps even 5 minutes from now!

The bottom line is that we have the power to WAIT while we allow more time and thought to go into how we are going to RESPOND instead of REACTING.  Typically, two things occur while we wait.  First, we allow some time to choose how we are “feeling”.  Yes, we CHOOSE how we feel.  Second, we have time, perhaps, to gather more facts.  Way too many decisions are made with emotions and not enough facts.  The great thing about waiting is that it allows us as leaders to CHOOSE how we are going to RESPOND — NOT REACT.

3 Ways American Income Life Leaders Portray Thoughts

  1. We choose our view.
  2. We check our focus.
  3. We control our input.

What we say influences our attitude.  Leaders stay away from these words:

•  I can’t
•  If
•  Maybe
•  I don’t think
•  Try
•  I don’t believe

Leaders strive to use these words:

•  I can
•  I will
•  I know
•  Expect the best
•  I believe
•  All things are possible

Leaders Have Winning Attitudes Due to What We Focus On at AIL

•  Forgiveness vs. Anger
•  Others vs. Self
•  Opportunities vs. Problems
•  Gratitude vs. Envy
•  Today vs. Yesterday
•  Giving vs. Taking

The great Sir Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”  As leaders at American Income Life, we must always remember that how positively we impact others will be reflected by how positively our lives reflect our ATTITUDE.
