Roger Smith, CEO of AIL/NILICO on Closer to the Heart
Wouldn’t it be great if we could do something to help the communities we visit, both foreign and domestic? Wouldn’t it be great if we could leave these places better than they were before we came?
We can and we are.
Closer to the Heart is a long-term project through which Torchmark Corporation, via its affiliates like American Income Life (AIL) — extends its commitment to the community by making financial and service contributions to organizations and programs that provide hands-on assistance in the communities we visit.
We partner with US-based charitable organizations that provide humanitarian aid in destinations we visit for SGA and Executive Council meetings as well as our annual Convention. We work with the partner organization to determine critical needs and how best to help support their efforts. We introduce the project at our meetings and solicit funds. When it is feasible, we seek hands-on opportunities for community service, like the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity project after Hurricane Katrina.
Torchmark Corporation has committed to match the funds that we and the other affiliate companies donate to these community projects up to $100,000 per year. We kicked off Closer to the Heart at the SGA meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico in April. Mark and I visited several areas that receive support from our partner organization, the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. We met the children, spoke with the families, and we came away touched and humbled.
We introduced our second project during General Session at Convention in the Dominican Republic in May. We are well on our way to being able to provide desperately needed housing in an area that has been ravaged by natural disasters.
